Arise and Come with Me My Friend

Arise and come with me my friend

Hurry to see the dawn!

God’s Greatness covers all the earth

The shadows of night are gone.

See there His Holy Splendor?

The works of God’s Great Hand!

His Mercy reaches above the skies

Truth calls across the land.

Join Wisdom in her rejoicing

At the Wonder of God’s creation

May we lift our voices in gratitude

Sing praises of adoration!

“The Lord created me (Wisdom) at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old…Rejoicing always before Him, Rejoicing in the world, His earth.”  (Proverbs 8:22,31)

Realigning Our Hearts

“Immediately afterward He compelled the disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead of Him….”  (Matthew 14:22 NASB)

The disciples had just witnessed Jesus provide food for over 5,000 people.  They were in a remote area with no grocery stores around the corner, so Jesus blessed five loaves of bread and two fish.  Then He fed a hungry crowd until they were satisfied.

After everyone ate their fill, the disciples gathered 12 baskets of leftovers.  Surely, they were basking in the awe of God’s overwhelming provision!  How incredible to see God at work and to participate in such a miracle!

But then Jesus compelled His disciples to get in a boat and go on ahead of Him.  Little did they know they would be navigating straight into difficulty.  The NLT version puts it this way:

“Meanwhile the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves” (Matthew 14:24).

Why is it when things are going so well that they suddenly veer off into choppy waters?  We start questioning what went wrong – how could seeming misfortune possibly be God’s plan for us?

Perhaps it is because lessons may be taught in the midst of miracles but they are best learned in the swirling of a storm.

Maybe the disciples’ hearts got caught up in the incredible provision instead of the incredible Provider. Certainly, we allow our hearts to be set on our blessings rather than on the Bestower of them.

Sometimes the Lord allows us into situations that are meant to refocus our eyes and realign our hearts. Be assured that Jesus walks with us through those storms. When our hearts are properly focused on Him, the crashing waves and howling winds subside into the background. It is only then that we hear our Lord’s reassurance, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid.”

 Dear Lord,

Thank you for the many ways you demonstrate your love and provision for me.  Help my heart to be in awe of you, my Savior and Gracious King.  Give me faith to trust in Your Goodness even when things look too hard or out of control.  Lord, help me to remember I have no need to fear because You are with me.”   In the precious name of Jesus, which is above all names, Amen.

The Letter

Today, I dared to open Your letter.

It beckoned to me from a dusty shelf,

but I was too afraid

to face the accusations

and guilt.

The words sounded just like You—

Strong and reassuring.

Somehow, they transported me

Into Your Presence.

The sting of unworthiness

pricked my heart.

I braced for rebukes that never came,

fully aware of Your undeserving favor.

Holy Words uttered long ago

now spoken to me—

“Come to me and I will give you rest.

Fear not, for I Am with you.

I AM.”

And then it comes—what my soul longs for.

Freedom—wrapped in Your forgiveness

Solace—found in Your grace

Refuge—forever in Your love.
